Broncos off to running start in exhibition play

The Olds College Broncos women's soccer team got its exhibition schedule started on the right note, picking up seven of a possible nine points over the weekend in Red Deer.

Broncos head coach Niels Slotboom was encouraged by his young team's play over the weekend.

"Overall, it was a successful weekend," he said. "It was great for players to get first hand experience at the ACAC level."

Friday was productive for the Broncos, taking a narrow 1-0 victory over Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves. Felicia Rodney scored for the Broncos, while Auslin McDaniel-Perrin picked up the clean sheet in goal.

After getting back into training, the Broncos were happy to get back into game action, Rodney said.

"There were positives from both sides," she said. "I think we connected as a team getting into the game situation more than we did in training."

Rodney again provided all the offence for the Broncos on Saturday, scoring twice in helping the Broncos to a 2-2 draw against The King's University Eagles.

The Broncos' offence made its presence felt Sunday, wrapping up the weekend with a 5-0 victory over the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.

Rodney added another two goals to complete a five-goal weekend, while Jayna Espie-Sanderson also scored twice.

Sydnee Schlamp wrapped up the scoring for the Broncos, while McDaniel-Perrin posted her second clean sheet of the weekend.

The weekend was a great opportunity for the team to come together, Rodney said.

"I think we became more connected through our playing style, and on and off the field," she said. "Travelling from Olds to Red Deer, we became more connected, and as we played, our passes started to connect."

The Broncos will wrap up their exhibition schedule on Saturday, September 1 against the Vikings in Camrose at 11 a.m., with their season opener set for Saturday, September 8 at noon at Richardson Pioneer Field against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
