Broncos drop match in four sets

On Saturday afternoon in Olds, the Olds College Broncos (0-22) dropped a match to the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (7-15) for the second time in as many nights, losing in 4 sets (25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15).

Grace Porter won player of the game for the Rattlers while Amber Stigter led the team with 13 kills. Meanwhile Victoria Ringuette won player of the game for the Broncos, also with 13 kills.

After a close start to the match, the Rattlers began to pull away late in the set, pulling away to take an 18-11 lead. After a few sloppy points that saw the Rattlers take a 21-13 lead, the Broncos took a timeout.

The Rattlers would win the next four points following the timeout to take the first set 25-13.

The Broncos would start the second set on top, jumping ahead 14-10 as the Rattlers took their first timeout.

The Broncos sustained their lead, but the Rattlers began clawing back, getting within one point down 20-19, forcing a Broncos timeout. The Broncos would take the next two points as the Rattlers took a timeout of their own. A few points later the Broncos would take the set 25-20 after a Rattlers hitting error.

The Rattlers came out swinging in the fourth set, never trailing as they sustained a four to five point lead during the middle portion of the set. The Rattlers would easily finish the Broncos off as a Claire Armstrong serve hit the net to give Medicine Hat a 25-18 win.

The Rattlers again got off to a hot start, outplaying the Broncos early in the fourth to take a 16-12 lead. The Broncos struggled to find kill opportunities close to the net while the Rattlers consistently delivered when they had the chance. The Rattlers would take the set minutes later, 25-15.

Saturday afternoon was also senior night for the Broncos, with Clara Serrano, Victoria Ringuette, and Shaelynne Roux all being recognized for their two years with the team.

All three athletes came into the ACAC together in 2016 and became a major part of the Broncos family. This year all three took the next step in terms of leadership, serving as mentors for the young Broncos team.
