Early lead gives Broncos important win over RDC Kings

The Olds College Broncos men's soccer team jumped out to 2-0 lead minutes into the game against Red Deer College and didn't look back, taking a 5-2 win Sunday, Oct. 13.

Less than two minutes into the game the Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Wilson Ouattara assisted on goals to Oliyad Abera and Fabian Gromenida. Less than a minute into the game Ouattara gave a nice cross to Abera who was able to deposit the ball into the back of the net. Less than a minute later he gave the ball to Gromenida who raced to the net and out the ball past RDC keeper Jacob Hamilton.

At the nine minute mark Luiz Guimaraes took a pass from Nigel Stebanuk and put the Broncos up 3-0 on the first place Red Deer Kings.

RDC has some great chances through the remainder of the half, but Olds College goalie Ryan Murphy was able to thwart their attempts or the Kings shots went wide.

Just before the 30 minute mark Nigel Stebanuk broke free and powered the bell past the RDC keeper to increase the lead to 4-0.

RDC responsed at the 36 minute mark as Pedro Humberto Moura Neto scored from Dagen Simmon.

The teams went back and forth the remainder of the half, but were unable to get balls on goal.

The shots were 11-7 for Red Deer in the first half with Broncos goalie Murphy making four saves and Red Deer keeper Jacob Hamilton making three saves.

The second half was a chippy one with multiple yellow and red cards given with both teams getting strong opportunities on goal. The first team to capitalize was the Broncos when Abera sent Garren Oosterhuis in alone and he made no mistake to make the game 5-1 for the Broncos.

As injury time began Red Deer cut the score to 5-2 when Pedro Humberto Moura Neto scored on a penalty, with Bronco's Murphy diving across and just missing making a brilliant save.

Player of the Game for Red Deer was Gabriel Martin Fonseca and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was defender and team captain Brendan Klassen.

Shots were 19-16 for the Kings with Olds goalie Ryan Murphy making six saves and Red Deer's Hamilton making six saves.
