Complete team effort guides Broncos to win over Ambrose

With almost a full team contribution, Olds College Broncos men's soccer team defeated the Ambrose University Lions 6-0 Saturday, Oct. 19 at Richardson Pioneer Field. This keeps the Broncos playoff hopes alive as they trail Red Deer College for the final playoff spot. With a Broncos win over SAIT and a Red Deer tie or loss against Medicine Hat tomorrow the Broncos men's soccer team will make the playoffs for the first time in program history.

Seven minutes into the game Nigel Stebanuk passed the ball up to Fabian Gromenida who powered the ball past Ambrose goalie Matthew Stacey.

At the nine minute mark Wilson Ouattara passed the ball to Oliyad Abera who shot the ball just inside the post to make the score 2-0 for Olds.

At the 15 mark of the game Ryan Wolff took a free kick from just past half and was able to put the ball through the defenders and goalie and into the net to increase the Broncos lead.

Ouattara pounded a ball from outside the box that powered by Stacey and into the net to make the score 4-0 Olds. Assist on the goal was from Abera.

As extra time began, Stebanuk broke in on goal with a defender between him and Gromenida. He was able to get the ball past the defender and Gromenida deposited the ball into the open net to make it 5-0 Olds.

Shots at halftime were 21-2 for Olds with shots on goal 14-1 for the Broncos, and corner kicks were 6-0 for the Broncos.

Jaxson Simon took over in goal for Ryan Murphy at halftime, along with Garren Oosterhuis and Austin Nguyen. Noah Kambeitz and Keegan Bolton entered the game shortly after.

Moments after entering the game with 13 minutes left on the clock Jackson Schultz-Kingsley took a free kick pass from Abera and redirected the ball into the back of the net.

With 10 minutes left in the game Levi Power entered at forward.

Player of the game for Ambrose was Nathan Polonenko and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was midfielder Oliyad Abera who had one goal and two assists in the game.

Shots were 35-6 for the Broncos with Olds goalies Ryan Murphy and Jaxson Simon each making a single save while Ambrose's Mathew Stacey made 12 saves.
