OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos rodeo team roped in a significant awards haul at its season-opening Canadian Collegiate Rodeo Association (CCRA) event, hosted by Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek, B.C.

Maysa Powelson (Welling, Alta.) picked up High Point Cowgirl honours for the weekend after posting competitive results in Pole Bending, Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping; she tied for top spot in the latter category, only to lose the commemorative saddle in a coin toss.

The Broncos did take home two additional saddles as Becky Bradley (McLure, B.C.) took top honours in Goat Tying with a cumulative time of 18 seconds between her two runs, while Walker Sjogren (Big Beaver, Sask.) walked away with the top prize in Saddle Bronc after posting a score of 76 in the Sunday session to secure a combined score of 128, coming just ahead of Logan Duffy (Buck Lake, Alta.) and his 117 points.

A number of additional Broncos also turned in strong showings over the weekend, with Kegan Bishell (Consort, Alta.) and Cody Fraser (Quorm, AUS) winning Bull Riding sessions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

In Barrel Racing, the Broncos placed multiple contestants in the top 10 in both sessions including Powelson (fifth on Saturday, seventh on Sunday), Morgan Kiemele (Hanna, Alta.; fourth on Sunday), Kassidy Butler (Red Deer County, Alta.; ninth on Saturday) and Riley Beier (Vanderhoof, B.C.; ninth on Sunday).

Along with Bradley's winning performance in Goat Tying, reigning CCRA Cowgirl of the Year Cassidy Maffenbeier (Hoosier, Sask.) placed fourth on Saturday and 10th on Sunday, while Dalyce Shannon (Drayton Valley, Alta.) was second on Saturday before just missing out on the top 10 on Sunday.

Powelson and Beier also successfully completed both runs in Breakaway Roping, with Powelson finishing second and eighth in the two sessions, followed by Beier in seventh and ninth.
