Broncos keep rolling, coming from behind to beat Clippers

On February 17 the Olds College Broncos (14-5) won their sixth straight game, taking down the Briercrest Clippers (4-15) 88-73 after a huge fourth quarter.

Brittney Thibeaux and Kristina Bajovic were fantastic in the contest, scoring 33 and 32 points respectively for the victors.

After jumping ahead to a quick 14-7 lead, the Broncos clawed their way back into the tightly contested game, scoring nine of the next 13 points to trail by only two.

The Clippers remained a force to be reckoned with on the boards, bringing down twice as many as the Broncos in the first quarter as Kai Wyatt scored seven to put the Clippers up 24-17.

Lacking some intensity, the Broncos were forced to call a timeout after a Kourtney Kobitz three pointer extended the Clippers lead to 10 points.

It seemed as if the Clippers game plan early on was to shut down the Broncos threats under the basket. The Clippers, specifically Dionne Martin, did an excellent job in the first quarter of shutting down scoring threat Brittney Thibeaux by closing off passing lanes and playing tight one-on-one defense.

Thibeaux, who has thrived in iso situations down low this year, wouldn't be outplayed down low for long. Thibeaux brought down six boards in the second quarter as she powered her way to a half-high 16 points on 8-11 shooting.

After the first half the Clippers led the Broncos 44-40 with scoring from eight different athletes. Meanwhile Kristina Bajovic trailed Thibeaux in scoring by just two points with 14 of her own.

The Broncos finished the third quarter within two points of the Clippers, down 63-61 going into the final frame.

The Broncos found their first lead of the game midway through the frame when Bajovic made a layup in traffic to go up 71-69.

A few minutes later, a cluch Allen-Gullion three pointer put the Broncos up five, 76-71. A made Thibeaux lay-up and some solid defense later the Broncos held a sturdy 82-73 lead with 1:34 left on the clock.

The Broncos would go on to outscore the Clippers 27-10 in the quarter to pick up a victory in the team's third last game of the season.

Following the game, Kai Wyatt, who scored a team-high 19 points, was named The Pit Player of the Game for the Clippers while Kristina Bajovic picked up the honour for the Broncos
