Allen-Gullion’s hot first half leads Broncos in win over SAIT

Olds College Broncos women's basketball team defeated the SAIT Trojans 103-53 in the Staff and Faculty Appreciation Game Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game off a Michaela Allen-Gullion three and Alli Taylor layup. They extended their lead to 16-4. The teams then exchanged baskets with SAIT cutting the lead to 16-9 before the Broncos pushed back and built a 25-9 lead with 3:28 left in the first quarter. The Broncos took a timeout moments later and then extended their lead to 29-11. The first quarter ended with the Broncos holding a 34-16 lead

The second quarter started with the Broncos extending their lead to 41-16. Michaela Allen-Gullion hit three straight three-pointers, the last with a hand in her face, to push the Broncos to a 56-23 lead and force a SAIT timeout with 4:04 left in the second quarter. The teams exchanged baskets, with Brandi Thibeaux hitting a three pointer and then contested layup and free throw to take a 64-25 lead. The teams exchanged baskets to give the Broncos a 66-27 lead at halftime. Michaela Allen-Gullion had a game high 33 points in the first half.

The teams exchanged baskets to start the second half before the Broncos went on a 5-0 run to make the score 81-36 half way through the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the third quarter giving the Broncos an 87-43 lead after three quarters.

Olds got the first points of the fourth quarter extending their lead to 91-43. SAIT hit two free throws for their first points of the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets and the Broncos led 101-51 off a Macyn Morning Bull layup with 3:35 left in the game. SAIT took a timeout with a 103-53 Broncos lead with 1:03 left in the game and that is how the score ended.

Player of the game for SAIT was Rachel Osczevski with a team high 15 points and nine rebounds and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Michaela Allen-Gullion with a game high 49 points to go with five rebounds, eight assists and a game high four steals.

The Broncos led the game in rebounds 44-31, assists 26-12, steals 19-5 and blocks 8-2. Brittney Thibeaux had a game high 11 rebounds and four blocks, while Brandi Thibeaux had a game high nine assists for the Broncos.

The Broncos are on the road to end the first half of the season, as they head to Briercrest College and Medicine Hat College Nov. 29 and 30 respectively.
