OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos and Lethbridge College Kodiaks battled hard, but ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw at Richardson Pioneer Field on Sunday.

Shawnessy Mark (Edmonton, Alta.) scored for the Broncos (1-0-1), while Bryce Sherring responded for Lethbridge (0-1-1).

In goal, Auslin McDaniel-Perrin (La Grange, Oregon) made nine saves for Olds, while Lethbridge keeper Paige Gattafoni turned aside eight shots for the Kodiaks.

After a slower start on both sides, the Kodiaks nearly opened the scoring in the 29th minute, but a threatening cross soared through the Broncos box with no damage.

Olds would break the deadlock two minutes later, as a corner kick found its way to Mark, who pushed the ball past Gattafoni to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

The Broncos nearly doubled their advantage in the 39th minute, as a free kick from Paige Whitehead (Liverpool, UK) went off the crossbar, though Gattafoni was able to secure the ball.

Lethbridge found the equalizer in the 41st minute, as they also had a free kick go off the crossbar, and Bryce Sherring was there to knock home the rebound to make the game 1-1 going into halftime.

The Broncos came out flying to start the second half, with Felicia Rodney (Calgary, Alta.) getting a number of high-quality chances, though she was unable to find the back of the net.

Sherring nearly got her second of the game for the Kodiaks in the 61st minute, but her shot from about 12 yards out hit the crossbar.

Momentum shifted from side to side the rest of the way, with both teams seeing scoring chances go by the wayside in settling for the draw.

Olds continues its season-opening homestand next weekend as they welcome the Red Deer College Queens on Saturday at noon, then the Lakeland College Rustlers on Sunday at noon.

Meanwhile, the Kodiaks will travel to Medicine Hat to battle the Rattlers on Sunday at noon.
