Broncos win exciting free kick filled game

The Olds College Broncos women's soccer team defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 1-0 in the "Faculty and Staff Appreciation" game Sunday, Sept. 22 at Richardson Pioneer Field.

The teams took a little while to feel each other out before Medicine Hat had the first good chance of the game, but Broncos keeper Jewels Hallock made an amazing diving save.

The return of Paige Whitehead at midfield after a game absence was a noticeable difference the Broncos offense appeared to be more in sync.

Shots at halftime were 14-10 for Medicine Hat with shots on goal 10-4 for the Rattlers, and corner kicks were two to one for the Broncos.

Seven minutes into the second half Medicine Hat had a free kick from Jadyn Fode that forced Hallock to make another diving save.

The Broncos had their own free kick by Katharina Oeltermann when Paige Whitehead was taken down inside the box. The Rattlers had a great wall set-up, but the Broncos got two more chances that were thwarted.

Medicine Hat had two more chances on free kicks, but the Broncos defense was well setup and prevented a strong chance.

At the seventieth minute there was a Rattlers handball in the box and Katharina Oeltermann made no mistake on the penalty kick putting the ball into the bottom left hand corner to make the score 1-0 for Olds.

Medicine Hat got one last free kick moments by Aleena Matthews before the game ended but the Broncos were able to clear it and the whistle was blown.http://gobroncos.ca/sports/wsoc/2019-20/photos/IMG_2910.jpg
