Broncos fall to SAIT in battle for second place

Olds College Broncos women's soccer team lost 3-0 to the SAIT Trojans in the battle for second place in the ACAC South Sunday, Oct. 20 at Richardson Pioneer Field. The game was the Graduating student-athlete appreciation game and Julianna Hallock, Emma Hatcher, Felicia Rodney and Sydnee Schlamp were honoured after the game.

The game started with back and forth play with both teams exchanging opportunities.

The Broncos had a great chance at the goal early on when Hailey Pettersen made an attempt, but she was unable to get the ball through bodies and on net.

SAIT had a great chance of their own off a free kick that hit the post at the 21 minute mark.

Cass Haynes had a great opportunity at the 23 minute mark but SAIT keeper Stine Thorne made a diving save to preserve the scoreless game.

Jaime McPherson opened the scoring in the 24th minutes when she took a pass from Jade Metz and put the ball past Olds goalie Kathleen Andres.

Shots at halftime were 16-6 for SAIT with shots on goal 10-5 for the SAIT, and Olds having the only corner kick of the first half.

SAIT got the first quality chance of the second half when Kenzie Georgsen took a shot from just inside the box. Andres was up to the challenge and grabbed the shot out of the air.

SAIT's Jade Metz opened the scoring in the second half at 64:12 when Emma Wheeldon gave her a lead pass. Andres got a piece of the ball, but not enough to stop the ball from getting past the goal line.

Moments later Kate Campbell got a shot on goal after a free kick from Katharina Oeltermann, but Thorne was in the right position to make the save.

SAIT struck again at the 75th minute Jade Metz was sent in from Misty Seastrom to make the score 3-0 and that is how the game ended.

Player of the game for SAIT was Jessica Gabel and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Cass Haynes.

Shots were 33-15 for SAIT with Olds goalie Kathleen Andres making 13 saves and SAIT's Stine Thorne making 10.Corner kicks were 3-1 for Olds.

The loss drops Olds into third place in the ACAC South heading into the playoffs where they will face Concordia and puts SAIT into second place where they will face King's.
