Kodiaks pick up fifth win of season vs. Broncos in four sets

On November 3 the Lethbridge Kodiaks (5-2) took down the Olds College Broncos (0-5) at the Ralph Klein Center in four sets (23-25, 35-33, 25-14, 25-19)

Any momentum gained in the opening moments of the first set were short lived, with both teams clawing back and fourth, tying the game at seven, and again at nine. After a few good kills, however, the Kodiaks took a 20-16 lead.

As most of the set went, the Broncos got back in the game quickly, rallying to win four out of five points late in the set to knot he game up at 22. The teams exchanged serves into the net before two straight Broncos points gave them their first set win of the season 25-23.

The Kodiaks came out hot in the second set, jumping out front to a 15-10 lead. But just like the first set, the Broncos rallied back to come within one point, and forced a Kodiaks timeout with the score 21-20.

Out of the timeout, the Broncos would win three straight points, taking a 23-21 lead.  The Kodiaks won a few in a row, and then the teams exchanged points until the score was locked all the way up to 33-33. Two straight errors proved to be the end of the Broncos second set hopes, as the Kodiaks took the thrilling second set 35-33.

The Kodiaks would be the ones to make a charge in the third game. With the Broncos leading by five, the Kodiaks began swinging, taking an 11-9 win leading to a Broncos timeout. Out of the timeout the Kodiaks won eight out of the next ten points to take a commanding 18-11 lead.

The Kodiaks officially found their game as Kristine Ward, who came into the contest with the second most kills in the ACAC with 89, was a force to be reckoned with, knocking ball after ball into the hardwood as the Kodiaks cruised to a 25-14 win.

The Kodiaks came out firing in the fourth as the Broncos had no answer to Ward's dominating serve, making four straight errors on her service as the Kodiaks began with a 12-2 lead.

As they did the first two sets, the Broncos slowly began clawing back into the game, forcing their way to withing four points, down 18-14. However, a few costly errors down the strethch would spell the end of the Broncos chances, dropping the set 25-19.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow at 1:00 P.M., again at the Ralph Klein Center.
