Trojans take match in straight sets

On January 20, the SAIT Trojans (8-10) took down the Olds College Broncos (0-20) for the second straight night in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 26-24).

Abby Grobmeier played a fantastic game for the Broncos at the libero position, and was given player of the game honours following play. Meanwhile Jayden Roch made six kills for the Trojans and was given the visiting team's player of the game award.

The Trojans flew out of the gate claiming eight of the first 10 points played. The Broncos quickly clawed back though, as Shaelynne Roux provided a service ace before a spectacular play from Jennifer Saj got an unlikely third hit over the net to cut the deficit to just two.

SAIT would put their foot on the gas after that though, winning nine of the next 13 points for a commanding 17-10 lead as the Broncos used their second timeout. A Trojan kill a few points later would give them a 25-18 first set win.

The Broncos played a better set in the second, gaining a three point lead twice in the match, forcing a SAIT timeout as the Broncos led 16-13; and would soon make it 19-13.

However, four straight points from the Trojans would make things interesting, as the Broncos lead was cut to one up 20-19, forcing a timeout.

The Broncos gained a 23-20 lead before disaster struck. The veteran Trojan team would take the next five straight points, leaving the Broncos distraught and down two sets to zero.

The third set was similar to the second, as both teams battled back and fourth exchanging leads until SAIT won a few in a row to go up 19-16. The Broncos though would claim five of the next seven points to knot the game at 21, and then again at 23. Roch would make a fantastic hit on the following play to have a match point before Elaina Dunbar did the same for the Broncos to extend the match.

A service error on the following play gave the Trojans another set point, and then what appeared to be a missed hit by was overruled as a tipped ball, as the Trojans took the match in straight sets, winning the third 26-24.
