Broncos quieted by Queens

OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos fought hard, but ultimately fell in straight sets to the Red Deer College Queens at the Ralph Klein Centre on Sunday.
For Olds College (1-15), Karley Dieken led the attack with six kills and five digs, while Megan Gleddie chipped in with five kills and nine digs.
Abby Grobmeier (13 digs) and Avery Gammel (15 assists, 10 digs) also made strong contributions for the Broncos.
Katrina Dawe paced the Queens (10-6) with 13 kills and six digs, while Britt Davis added nine kills and seven digs, and Emma Holmes had six kills and seven digs.
Olds College got off to a good start in the opening set, going up 13-11 midway through the frame. However, the Queens asserted themselves from there, as they went on to take the opening set 25-20.
The second and third sets followed nearly identical formulas, with the Queens jumping ahead early and not letting up, finishing each set with identical 25-16 scorelines.
Dieken was named The Pit BBQ Broncos Player of the Game, while Queens setter Natalie Bloemen earned player of the game honours for Red Deer College.
The Broncos have a bye next week before taking the court at home against the Ambrose University Lions on Friday, January 25 at 6 p.m., one of Olds College's Make Some Noise for Mental Health games.
Meanwhile, the Queens are back on the court Friday, as they host the Briercrest College Clippers at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 6 p.m.
