Broncos serving leads to victory over Lethbridge

Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team won 3-1 (25-12, 25-17, 20-25, 25-17) to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the Broncos We Dig Pink-Women's Cancer Awareness Game Friday, Nov. 1at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The first set started slow with neither team taking control until Keira Mackenzie stepped to the service line and the Broncos went on a 10 point run to take a 16-7 lead and didn't look back. The Broncos took the first set 25-12.

The second set was close until Tabi Martin stepped to the service line at 10-8 for Olds and her strong serving put Lethbridge out of sorts until the Broncos had a 15-8 lead. The only thing to stop her was a long serve, but Olds was able to get the ball back on the next serve. The Broncos maintained the lead for the remainder of the set to take the second set 25-17.

Lethbridge started strong in the third set, taking an 8-3 lead early on, forcing an Olds timeout. Lethbridge came out of the timeout strong and extended their lead to 12-3. Tabi Martin broke the run with a strong kill, but Lethbridge quickly took the serve back. The teams played side-out ball until Tabi Martin came up to serve and cut the lead to 15-9 forcing a Lethbridge timeout. The teams went back and forth with Lethbridge maintaining their six point lead. Olds called another timeout at 23-17 and got the ball back with Tabi Martin up to serve cutting the lead to 23-20 before Lethbridge took the set 25-20.

The Broncos jumped out to a 7-1 lead off serving from Janeen Pellat to start the fourth set. The teams then went back and forth until a Tabi Martin kill ignited another run by the Broncos, this time with Avery Gammel up to serve and building a 15-6 lead. Kayley Lloyd had a great party ball to help extend the lead while Janeen Pellat was up to serve to extend the Broncos lead to 19-9. Lethbridge went on mini runs of their own to make the score 19-12 and 22-15 before the Broncos took the game 25-17

Player of the game for Lethbridge was Morgan Bullerwell with a game high six service aces to go with four kills and five digs and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Tabi Martin with a game high 12 kills to go with a team high four service aces, and 10 digs and a block.

The Broncos led the game with kills 42-26, assists 39-22 and blocks 9-7 while Lethbridge held the advantage in the game with service aces 12-8 and digs 65-63. Natalya Hauser had a game high 18 assists and Francesca Sandini had a game high 27 digs.

The Broncos host Lethbridge College again for Olds College Student Appreciation Game Saturday, Nov. 2. Game times are 6:00 pm and 1:00 pm respectively.
