Broncos lose the back end of double header to Kodiaks

Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 26-24) to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the Broncos Olds College Student Appreciatuon game Game Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The first set Lethbridge jumped out to 5-1 lead before a Tabi Martin kill stopped the run. Lethbridge got the serve back again and forced an Olds timeout at 8-2 for Lethbridge. Lethbridge continued their strong play pushing their lead to 16-2 with Claire Armstrong up to serve. A setting error turned the ball over to the Broncos and Searra Schofner had a dagger of a service ace to start a small Olds run to 16-5. The teams played side-out ball, with the Broncos cutting the score to 25-17.

The Broncos came out strong in the second set jumping out to an 8-3 lead and forcing a Lethbridge timeout. Lethbridge cut the lead to 10-9 with a run of their own before the teams played sideout ball. A fantastic, long rally spurred on a run by the Broncos to help them build up a 19-14 lead and forcing a Lethbridge timeout. Lethbridge responded to tie the game at 20-20 before Lethbridge took a 22-21 lead and forcing a Broncos timeout. Lethbridge took the second set 25-23.

Lethbridge jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set to force a Broncos timeout. The Broncos came out of the timeout strong to tie it 4-4. The teams then went back and forth, point-for-point, with Lethbridge able to extend their lead by two, but now more. The Broncos went on a run to make the score 14-13, but Lethbridge quickly tied it on a long serve. The Broncos took an 18-16 lead, forcing a Lethbridge timeout. The Broncos were able to extend their lead to 22-19 off some incredible stuff blocks. Lethbridge was able to take the lead 23-22 out of the timeout to force an Olds timeout. Olds took the lead out of the timeout 24-23 but Lethbridge came back to take a 26-24 win.

Player of the game for Lethbridge was Jamie Brown with a team high 12 assists and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Courtney Greenway with a game high seven digs and a team high service aces.

The Broncos led the game in kills 27-21, and assists 35-16 while Lethbridge held the advantage in the game with digs 53-50 and blocks 18-5. Both teams had seven aces. Tabi Martin had a team high eight kills and two blocks, Avery Gammel had a game high 33 assists and team high two service aces and Francesca Sandini had a game high 18 digs.

The Broncos host Red Deer College Thursday, Nov. 7 for the Staff and Faculty Appreciation Game. Game time is 6:00 pm.
