Broncos lose to RDC in Zaleschuk’s return to lineup

Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-18) to the Red Deer College Queens in the Broncos Olds College Staff and Faculty Appreciation Night Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

RDC jumped out to a 12-5 lead and forcing an Olds timeout. The teams went back and forth after the timeout with the Broncos getting the score as close as 15-10, after a three point run, but ultimately Red Deer won 25-16. 

Red Deer jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the second set. Olds was able to score out of the timeout, but Red Deer got the ball back and the teams played sideout ball until Red Deer took 14-4 and then a 16-6 lead and forcing another Olds timeout. With Avery Gammel up to serve the Broncos went on a three point run to make the score 22-12 but that is as close as they would get, taking the game 25-13.

The third set was the closest of the game, but Red Deer jumped out to a 3-1 lead and were able to extend the lead to 9-3 before Emily Zaleschuk led the Broncos on a short run to make the score 9-6 for RDC. Red Deer gradually built up their lead, highlighted by a four point run to make the score 17-7, and then forcing an Olds timeout at 22-13. The Broncos then went on a five point run to make the score 23-16 and then 24-18, ultimately falling 25-18.

Player of the game for Red Deer was Kaylee Domoney with a game high 21 digs and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Emily Zaleschuk with four kills and six digs.

Red Deer held the advantage in kills 34-21, assists 32-19, service aces 11-2 and blocks 5-3 while Olds held the dig advantage 49-48. Tabi Martin had a team high seven kills, Avery Gammel had a team high 14 assists, Francesca Sandini had a team high 13 digs and Samantha Laboucan, Janeen Pellatt and Searra Schoepfner had a block each for Olds.

The Broncos host Ambrose University Saturday, Nov. 16 for the Parent Appreciation Night. Game time is 6:00 pm.
