Gammel leads Broncos in loss to Briercrest

OLDS, AB - Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-15)) to the Briercrest College Clippers in the Every Child Matter Day Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

Briercrest jumped out to 4-0 and 7-1 leads before Olds was forced to take a timeout at 9-2 for the Clippers. Olds was able to cut the lead to 11-6 until Briercrest's captain and setter Ashley Erickson had a dump and then Broncos' Kayley Lloyd had a powerful kill, but Briercrest went on a run, including two straight blocks to build up their lead to 16-7 lead. The teams exchanged points until Olds was forced to take a timeout at 20-10. The teams exchanged points with a laser of a kill from Samanthan Laboucan bringing the score to 23-14. Laboucan then served the Broncos to 23-20 and forcing a Briercrest timeout. Olds scored out of the timeout to bring the score to 23-21 before a wide serve ended the 7-0 run for Olds. The Broncos got the ball back right away, but Briercrest held on to win the first set 25-22.

Briercrest jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. The Broncos bounced back to tie the game 4-4, but then Briercrest pushed back to take a 9-5 lead. The Broncos took a timeout at 18-10 for Briercrest. Briercrest held on to their lead to take a nine point lead 22-13. The Broncos jumped back to being the score to 23-16. Janeen Pellat had a monster block to bring the score to 24-17, but Briercrest took the set 25-17.

The teams played a back and forth third set with neither team taking control of the game until Briercrest jumped out to an 18-10 lead and forcing a Broncos timeout. Briercrest scored the next three points out of the timeout to take a 21-10 lead before a serve into the net gave Olds back the ball. The teams played sideout ball until Briercrest took the set 25-15.

Player of the game for Briercrest was Mia Harder with nine kills and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Avery Gammel with a team high 22 assists to go with seven digs.

Broncos held the advantage in digs 47-46 and blocks 6-4 while Briercrest held the advantage in kills 37-25, assists 35-22 and service aces 7-5. Tabitha Martin had a team high six kills, Natalya Hauser had a game high two service aces, Francesca Sandini had a game high 18 digs, and Searra Schoepfner had a game high three blocks for Olds.

The Broncos are done action for the semester and will be travelling to Medicine Hat College and Lethbridge College in the New Year before returning to the Ralph Klein Centre for Olds College Student Appreciation Night Friday, January 24.
